Welcome to the Port Nicholson Block Claim website.
We have designed this website to provide you with information on the historical claims relating to the Port Nicholson Block.
The report of the Waitangi Tribunal into the Wellington Inquiry District - "Te Whanganui a Tara me Ona Takiwa" - validates the history passed down through generations. This website is about that long historical struggle to gain recognition of the events that occurred.
Over the last two decades the claim process has been considered and found to have great merit. We now have to follow a step by step process - set down by the Crown - to seek a fair and equitable settlement. All steps, procedures and events necessary to gain a just settlement are included here for your information.
In seeking settlement of historic grievances we are only able to negotiate for assets held by the Crown. We are not able to seek redress involving privately owned property - and neither do we want to act in a manner which will be detrimental to the communities in which we live.
